Every year, a quiet deadline arrives for every Apple developer: the annual membership renewal. Miss it, and the consequences are not abstract. Your apps disappear from the App Store, new submissions and updates are blocked, and certificates and provisioning profiles become unreachable — all while installed apps keep working silently on your users' devices. Renewal is a small payment and a few clicks, but the failure modes around it are easy to get wrong. This guide walks through the 2026 renewal process end to end, straight from Apple's official Program Renewal documentation.
Why renewal is not a formality
The Apple Developer Program costs $99 per year for Individual and Organization memberships, and the Apple Developer Enterprise Program costs $299 per year — but the price is only half the story. If your membership expires, Apple's own documentation is explicit about what you lose:
- Your apps are no longer available for download on the App Store.
- You cannot submit new apps or updates.
- You cannot access Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles — no new signing, no new provisioning.
- Users who already installed your apps can keep using them; the apps continue to function.
- You keep access to some App Store Connect features and free development resources — but the storefront side of your business is frozen.
For the Enterprise Program the window is tighter: software is no longer available for download, and already-downloaded builds keep running for only 90 days after the expiration date, while certificates and provisioning profiles remain valid. One missed payment can quietly end a product line.
Step 1: Know your two renewal paths
Apple offers automatic and manual renewal, and which one you can use depends on how you enrolled and where you are.
Automatic renewal. If you enrolled through the Apple Developer website, you can switch on "Auto-renew" in the Membership details section of your account. Your default payment card is then charged the annual fee on your expiration date. The catch: automatic renewal is only available in certain regions — Australia, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, the UK, the US, and a list of others — so check whether your region qualifies before relying on it. If you enrolled through the Apple Developer app, your membership renews automatically as a subscription by default.
Manual renewal. You can renew manually starting 30 days before your expiration date, or any time after it expires. Your expiration date is shown in the "Membership details" section of your account on the Apple Developer website. To renew, sign in with the Apple Account you originally used to enroll and click the Renew Membership button.
Timing note: renew while your membership is still active and the renewal takes effect when the current term ends — no coverage gap. Renew after expiry and the new term starts the moment you complete the process. Either way, do not let the expiration date pass before you act; the recovery path costs more time than the renewal itself.
Step 2: Know exactly what happens if you lapse
The days around expiration matter. Apple gives you a 30-day runway before the deadline and a defined cleanup timeline after it:
- 30 days before expiration: you get the option to download a copy of your registered test device list, and/or opt in to having all devices removed immediately upon expiration — for developers who do not plan to renew.
- If you do not opt in: all registered test devices are removed automatically 180 days after membership expiration.
- After expiration: the membership restrictions above apply immediately — no downloads, no submissions, no Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles.
The test-device timeline is the detail most developers miss. If you renew after a long lapse, your device list may already be gone, and re-registering devices means they count against your annual device limits again.
Step 3: Renew and bring your apps back
Renewal after a lapse does not mean re-submitting your apps — Apple is explicit that you do not need to resubmit. The recovery order is:
- Complete the renewal (Renew Membership button, or resubscribe in the Apple Developer app).
- Free apps become available for download again within 24 hours.
- Paid apps come back after you sign in to App Store Connect and accept the Paid Applications Agreement.
- Sign back in to Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles and clean up: Apple gives you and your Admins the option to remove registered test devices you no longer use.
If you cancelled an Apple Developer app subscription, you can resubscribe at any time within one year of the expiration date — there is a generous window, but not an infinite one.
Step 4: Avoid the renewal gotchas
Three mistakes cause most renewal pain:
- Changing the account during renewal. You cannot make account changes while the renewal process is running — transferring the Account Holder role, converting an Individual membership to an Organization membership, or similar changes must wait until after renewal completes. Trying to bundle them stalls both processes.
- Expecting automatic renewal where it is not offered. If your region is not on Apple's automatic-renewal list, "I thought it would auto-renew" is not a safety net. Set a calendar reminder for 35-40 days before expiration instead.
- Assuming renewal is frictionless for Organization and Enterprise accounts. Renewal triggers re-verification for the Enterprise Program, and Apple reserves the right to reject renewal at its sole discretion. Organization accounts should confirm their D-U-N-S number and legal entity details are still current before renewing — a stale entity name is a common reason a renewal sits in review.
Step 5: The 5-point renewal checklist
- Check your expiration date in Membership details — know it even if auto-renew is on.
- Confirm your region supports auto-renew; if not, schedule manual renewal 30+ days out.
- Verify your payment method — the default card on the Apple Account must be valid and have headroom for the $99 or $299 fee.
- For Organization/Enterprise: confirm D-U-N-S and legal entity info are current before the renewal window opens.
- After renewing: verify apps are back (24h for free, Paid Applications Agreement for paid), and prune test devices in Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles.
